Effortlessly Keep Your 925 Silver Jewelry Sparkling

Tarnished silver jewelry

Has your 925 silver jewelry tarnished?

Don't worry, you can easily fix it.

The cleaning method can vary depending on the type of jewelry you own. For highly valuable silver pieces adorned with precious stones, I recommend either gently polishing it with a cloth or having it professionally cleaned by a jeweler if heavily tarnished.

If we are talking about jewelry that is not that delicate, then it will also depend on how bad the tarnishing is or the complexity of the piece.

If it has lots of nooks and crannies, it might be difficult to clean it using a polishing cloth, so most probably you will have to immerse it in a solution.

To give you an example of how to clean badly tarnished silver, here I have these wonderful "Margot de Taxco style" Mexican silver earrings, that I cleaned using:

Tarnished silver earrings

* Boiling water
* A container covered with aluminum foil
* 1 tsp of baking soda
* Optional (a dash of vinegar or a pinch of salt)
* Soft cloth (cotton)

Pour the boiling water in the container covered with aluminum foil, and then add the baking soda. If you want to speed up the process, you can also add a dash of vinegar. Dissolve completely.

Place your silver pieces into the container, making sure they make contact with the aluminum. Try not to overlap them to avoid scratches.

It is very important that the silver get in touch with the aluminum because this way, the warm water will activate the baking soda and start the process of transferring the tarnish to the foil.

Your 925 silver jewelry turns black because sulfur in the atmosphere mixes with silver, forming silver sulfide.

Thanks to the reaction that takes place when silver sulfide and aluminum are in contact while they are immersed in hot water mixed with baking soda, the sulfur detaches from the silver and migrates towards the aluminum, leaving your jewelry as new again.

As you can see, it was very easy to clean these earrings using this method. There are some others that I will be sharing with you in future articles.

It is good to know you can fix your jewelry without so much problem, however, it is best to take good care of it to avoid getting tarnished in the first place.

This method is very effective to clean chains or pieces that have many nooks and crannies. If this is the case, you can use a toothbrush to gently clean in depth and never forget to dry with a cotton cloth thoroughly, to get the beautiful and amazing shine of your silver jewelry.

Now that you know it's not complicated to keep your silver like new, you can buy it with confidence.
